Foreign 2 accused of helping North Korea circumvent US sanctions with digital currency

The US Justice Department is accusing 2 Europeans of teaching the North Korean regime how to circumvent sanctions blocks using cryptocurrency.

Not long ago, the New York prosecutor’s office announced that a Spanish and a British citizen colluded with an American citizen and were suspected of using blockchain to provide services and supply digital currency. Of course, this is all in circumvention of US law.

This American citizen is the developer of the notorious Ethereum cryptocurrency, who not long ago pleaded guilty to conspiracy so that the Asian country could circumvent all of America’s many sanctions. As a result of the trial, he was sentenced to 5 years, and a fine of $100,000 was also set.  

The prosecutor, on the other hand, said that people from other countries conspired to train, as for the Spaniard, he is the founder of a group that supports Pyongyang’s interests.

It was these individuals who allegedly recruited the founder of the cryptocurrency, Vigil Grffit, to organise illegal activities and even travel to an unfriendly state. In other words, these are illegal activities.

The prosecutor’s office says the accused eventually offered training adapted for residents of an Asian country. Its essence was to use blockchain and cryptocurrency to launder money as well as to circumvent sanctions. Of course, the public received answers to all their questions.

After that, work with Grffit continued, all in order to improve the digital currency infrastructure and develop it. Improvement was also about how to find new contacts in order to organise another conference.

The Spanish representative, who is also the unofficial representative of the Asian country, could get 20 years in prison, while the British entrepreneur could get 30 years.
